Join us for an 11-day tour to get a comprehensive picture of a century of events in the Central European region, with a special focus on the Second World War and the history of Jewry. From Prague through Vienna to Budapest, in Europe's wonderful historic cities, you will gain an insight into the life of pre-war Jewry and discover the atrocities these people had to endure; and the acts of solidarity and altruism they experienced during wartime. And besides, look back with us to the wonders of the Habsburg Empire, glimpsed through the eyes of the illustrious Empress Sisi; or see how Europe was shaped after the Second World War be it on the western and eastern side of the Iron Curtain. The extensive and varied city tours, the well-curated museums and the architectural beauty will take you on a journey into a rich cultural heritage and a diverse history; all crowned with a taste of local hospitality.
Passengers will be welcomed at Vaclav Havel Airport in Prague, and transferred by coach to the hotel. After an orientation dinner, the next day is spent in Prague's Castle District, which is nothing less than a living testament to the passage of time, with a stunning blend of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. On the same day, we visit Terezín, a propaganda showcase ghetto and forced labor complex for Jews built by Nazi Germany during World War II. Our group will have the opportunity to visit sites related to the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the mastermind behind the “Final Solution”, the systematic killing of Jews in Europe. On the final day in Prague, we explore the picturesque Old Town and the former Jewish Quarter, the well-known Josefov, to get a glimpse of what life must have been like for Jews during pre- and inter-war years.
After checking into our hotel in Vienna, we spend the next day exploring the historic marvels of the Habsburg Empire. In the morning, we discover one of Europe's most beautiful Baroque ensembles, the former imperial residency of Schönbrunn Palace. Then in the afternoon, everyone can see the opulence of the Hofburg, where Empress Elisabeth, Sisi, spent her daily life. Vienna was not spared in the Second World War; so, the next day, we also focus on the city's iconic WWII-related sites, including one of the six flak towers - anti-aircraft gun blockhouse towers constructed by the Germans - still standing today. Not forgetting, by no means, the Museum of Military History, which takes you on a fascinating journey of military history from the Habsburg Empire all the way to the Second World War itself.
We spend the last leg of our tour in Budapest, perhaps one of the most eclectic and therefore historically significant cities in Central Europe. You can learn about the history of Buda, occupied by the Ottoman Empire during the 16-17th centuries, or Pest, home to Jewish ghettos during the Second World War. And, to make this trip a little more than history, you can enjoy a cruise dinner on the River Danube, which separates Buda from Pest. Admire all the architectural beauty of the city, be it the majestic Parliament building, or the monumental Heroes' Square. In the meantime, learn about the city's wartime history, by visiting the Jewish Quarter, and also Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum and by passing by sites related to the siege of Budapest, one of the largest urban battles of WWII. To see what happened in the country after the war, visit with us the House of Terror Museum, the Malenki Robot Memorial or the Memento Park, where petrified memories of the communist era are gathered. The tour ends with a farewell dinner. On the last day, our guests are brought to the Liszt Ferenc International Airport for their return flights.
